The Namakkal district authorities have stumbled upon a mud pot containing a large number of ancient copper coins in the Kolli Hills. According to a release from U. Saghayam, District Collector, the district administration has embarked upon a project to make Kolli Hills a tourist spot. As a part of this endeavour, a number of works have been carried out.
One among them is the setting up of a park near the Boat House of the Tourism Department at Vasalurpatty in Thinnanur Panchayat. When an expansion work of the park was undertaken, some areas had to be excavated.
Then the workers found a mud pot containing more than 1,000 ancient copper coins (in the size of current 25 paise) in total weighing 5.9 kg.
They could be even more than 500 years old.
“All the details regarding the coins including their age would be obtained from the Archaeology Department. A report in this regard would be submitted to the Government”, Mr. Saghayam added.
